The Virgin Voyage

Lac du Flambeau, WI > Albert Lea, MN

Our first post-vaccination adventure began with a drive from Sandy Point to Myre Big Island. It took a little longer than the 5.5 hours we anticipated due to our RV rookie assumptions as our senior living scene now includes slower speeds and more frequent fuel stops. There is no question that we have aged during this pandemic. And while we may be old, we are certainly new at this.

Feeling lucky. So far, we love our new road home. Our first space was relatively easy to back into—we didn’t hit anything and only came close to having a narrow sapling take out a rear-view mirror. Thankfully I noticed in time and avoided infrastructure injury on the first day.

I spent most of the driving time watching the Texas State Championship Disc Golf Tournament and got to see the final holes inside the trailer via satellite TV. (Now THIS is camping!) It was so EXCITING to see our Wisconsin women, Hailey King and Holly Finley, take first and second place in the event. Hailey is a former Sandy Point Ranch teammate and Holly is a multiple Northwoods Open Champion and represents #Innovadiscs.

We are on an island surrounded by oak trees in a nearly empty campground. Last evening we took a sunset hike and explored the grounds, which are pretty muddy following the recent snow melt. Unlike our lake at home, however, the water is open and today the white caps are blowing in our direction. There are enormous white birds, the size of geese, out there but little else.

Wind Advisory: Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected. “Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle.”

Time to pack up and head to our next destination. We’re prepared for it to take longer than planned. Everyone knows it’s windy.
